A Pensacola National Monument was proposed in the 1940s, as part of the National Monument program, to preserve property with historical associations to Pensacola's harbor defenses and to maintain a "museum for relics and records" thereof. Congress passed legislation on July 2, 1948 to acquire property for the monument. However, it was repealed with the creation of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
