The harbor defenses of Pensacola were a trio of forts constructed between the 1820s-1840s at the entrance to Pensacola Bay to defend the Navy Yard. They included Fort Pickens on Punta de Sigüenza (Santa Rosa Island), Fort Barrancas on the mainland bluffs, and Fort McRee on Foster's Bank (Perdido Key). These forts could fire upon enemy ships entering Pensacola Pass from three angles, providing a tremendous tactical advantage.
