==Early years==
The new paper foundered for the first several years after its formationwas founded as a weekly, but its fortunes began with Loftin as editor.<ref>[https://ssl1.gmti.com/pns/helpdesk/history.shtml "Get to turn in Know Us > History"]</ref> In [[18991898]]it became a daily, when but foundered until [[Frank L. Mayes]] took over as editorin [[1899]]. In [[1904]], the ''Journal'' became a member of the [[Wikipedia:Associated Press|Associated Press]].
The ''Journal'' was purchased in [[1922]] by [[John Holliday Perry]], who also purchased the competing ''[[Pensacola Daily News]]'' in [[1924]] and merged the two operations into what is now the ''[[Pensacola News Journal]]''. Morning editions continue to bear the ''Pensacola Journal'' name until [[1985]].
