• 1861 – Civil War: Union forces under Commodore James Armstrong surrendered the Navy Yard, including Fort Barrancas and Fort McRee, to Major William H. Chase and his Confederate troops. Navy Yard quartermaster William Conway refused to strike the Union colors. William Franklin Lee joined the Confederacy.
• 1891 – Charles Perry Mason was born.
