Named for Lewis Warrington, a Navy officer instrumental in the foundation of the Pensacola Navy Yard, the community of Warrington was established in the 1840s. Originally located south of Bayou Grande, near the Navy Yard, the community was abandoned and reestablished on the other side of Bayou Grande in 1930, as was necessitated by the expansion of the Navy facilities.
Sanborn fire insurance maps from 1892 describe the original settlement as 8½ miles southwest of Pensacola, with a population of 1,200.
