A '''Battle of Pensacola''', considered part of the [[First Seminole War]], took place in May [[1818]] when American forces led by [[Andrew Jackson]] captured Pensacola, then the capital of [[Third Spanish period|Spanish West Florida]], which Jackson felt was being used by the Seminole for strikes against America. After the surrender by Spanish Governor [[Jose Masot]], Jackson established a temporary [[American provisional government]] in the city.
