June 28, 2007: 1500th article

It appears that Pensapedia's 1500th article is Gulf Coast Gab. dscosson ··· talk 17:50, 7 July 2008 (CDT)

Not no more it ain't! --Admin 17:54, 7 July 2008 (CDT)
Awesome! dscosson ··· talk 18:05, 7 July 2008 (CDT)
Race you to 1500? dscosson ··· talk 18:05, 7 July 2008 (CDT)
Nah, you go for it. I may work on First Baptist Church of Pensacola tonight... I checked out the history from the church's library months ago, and I figure they'd probably like it back sometime. --Admin 18:26, 7 July 2008 (CDT)

The 1500th article is Pensacola Historical Society! dscosson ··· talk 20:48, 8 July 2008 (CDT)

Confirm Edit Utility

8/21/07 - Added a captcha utility to block automated spammers. It will ask you to type a code whenever an account is created or a link is added to an article. In the latter case, I think I can tweak a setting where it doesn't force sysops to enter the code, or anyone whose email address has been confirmed. I will check on this. --Admin 14:04, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

June 29: 1,000th article

Pensapedia registered it's 1,000th "article" at 19:24 UTC on June 29, 2007. The article is Elias Durnford. dcosson ··· talk 14:26, 29 June 2007 (CDT)

June 21-22 Outage

Sorry about that, folks! In the words of Han Solo, "It's not my fault!" --Admin 14:06, 22 June 2007 (CDT)

Google Maps default setting

I changed the default map setting of our Google Maps installation from "hybrid" (which shows streets on top of satellite imagery) to "map" (which is streets only). All the satellite copyright information was breaking out of the infobox maps and flowing into the articles, making them harder to read. We can still use satellite imagery, but you now have to specify. --Admin 13:29, 8 December 2007 (CST)

.com and .org redirects

I noticed in the incoming traffic logs that a Google search for "Pensacola city limits" yielded results linking (for some reason) to the "pensapedia.org" version of the page. (The .org domain is registered and parked to point to the main .com domain.) However, since the Maps extension has an API key that only works for the pensapedia.com domain, people who clicked there were seeing an error. I tinkered around in the .htaccess file, and I think I've got it fixed to redirect all .org requests to their .com equivalent, but please let me know if you encounter any errors. --Admin 13:20, 25 April 2008 (CDT)

8/12/08 Weirdness

I recompiled Apache and apparently did something to the "tidy" extension for PHP. I could disable it, but it would break certain layout features (like infoboxes). Will get it resolved sometime today. — admin • talk  09:31, 12 August 2008 (CDT)

Okay, that should do it. — admin • talk  14:45, 12 August 2008 (CDT)

Google Maps down?

Seems to be. I'll look into if the problem is on my end. — admin • talk  16:12, 17 August 2008 (CDT)

http://maps.google.com is working for me. dscosson ··· talk 16:53, 17 August 2008 (CDT)

New MediaWiki Skin

There's a new skin (template) called "PensaBook" available in your user preferences. It will eventually replace MonoBook as the default template. Please try it out and let me know if you have any suggestions or encounter any errors. Thanks! — admin • talk  11:45, 24 August 2008 (CDT)

BTW -- I like it. dscosson ··· talk 06:55, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Thankya. I'll still be fine-tuning it, so feel free to make suggestions. I made it the default template ahead of schedule because of some funky things the old MonoBook inherited from the new version of Mediawiki. — admin • talk  13:02, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

The lowdown

It was a rough morning, but I got MediaWiki upgraded to the latest version and hopefully resolved some of the other issues. I recompiled my server's Apache & PHP a couple weeks back, and in doing so apparently messed up the "tidy" module. (That's what was causing the Google Maps problem.) Rather than track down the exact problem, it's probably easier/better just to convert infobox templates that use html table markup over to wiki markup. See my recent changes to {{Infobox Biography}} for an example. Let me know if you have any questions. — admin • talk  12:49, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Other things that need to be done: Google Maps (like Neighborhoods, Pensacola city limits, etc.) need to have a minor code upgrade to deal with their overlay transparencies (see Florida House of Representatives District 3 for an example). I'm also working on getting the new Lucene search engine up, but it's been a much more complicated process than I imagined. — admin • talk  13:02, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
WOO-HOO!!! I finally got the new search engine working with the dropdown box of suggestions as you type a search query. Try it out! — admin • talk  15:35, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
