The 1916 hurricane, the thirteenth Atlantic hurricane of the 1916 season, struck the Pensacola area on October 18, 1916.
It became a tropical storm in the western Caribbean on October 12, reaching hurricane strength on the 13th before hitting the Yucatan Peninsula on the 15th as a 100 mph hurricane. It turned northward, becoming a major hurricane on the 16th. It made landfall near Pensacola on October 18.
Damage
- Damaged the Pensacola Opera House, which was demolished in 1917
- Sank a ship offshore, killing 20 people
