On September 19, 1559, a hurricane made landfall near what is now known as Pensacola Bay, where the Spanish expedition led by Don Tristán de Luna y Arellano had anchored just over a month earlier to establish a colony. The hurricane devastated the expedition's ships, which were still laden with the supplies needed to feed the settlers and establish the colony.
Two of the wrecked ships in Luna's fleet have been discovered by archaeologists. They are known as the Emanuel Point shipwrecks.
