Pensacola Police Chief David Alexander III was born in Pensacola and graduated from Escambia High School. He was hired by the Pensacola Police Department as a cadet in 1983, promoted to police officer in 1984 and worked until 1989 when he left and was rehired in 1991 as an officer. Among his assignments have been Uniform Patrol, field training officer and supervisor in Uniform Patrol, Administrative Technical Services, Neighborhood Services, and Criminal Investigations divisions. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in human resource management from Troy State University. He also is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. Among his community activities are mentoring youths and community outreach. He became the Pensacola Police Department’s first African-American Chief of Police since the department was formed in 1821 when the City Council approved his appointment on July 16, 2015.

Chief Alexander III was born in Pensacola, Florida,. He was hired by the Pensacola Police Department as a cadet in 1983, promoted to police officer in 1984 and worked until 1989 when he left and was rehired in 1991 as an officer.

Among his assignments have been Uniform Patrol, field training officer and supervisor in Uniform Patrol, Administrative Technical Services, Neighborhood Services, and Criminal Investigations divisions.

The Escambia High School graduate has a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in human resource management from Troy State University.and graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. Among his community activities are mentoring youths and community outreach.


He has had memberships on the Statewide Terrorist Network Group, Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, U.S. Customs Blue Lightning Strike Force, as well as various youth and community boards.

Chief Alexander III has received numerous department awards in recognition of his service to the community, including a Bronze Cross and the Gold Medal of Valor, which is the department’s highest award for heroism.

He also has been named to the Police and Firefighters Heroes Hall of Fame, the Escambia High School Alumni Hall of Fame, and received the Volunteer of the Year and Sports Lifetime Achievement awards from the Emerald Coast Youth Sports Association
