M. Lane Gilchrist, Sr. (1936-2009) was mayor of Gulf Breeze for seventeen years, from 1992 until his death in 2009.
Born on November 24, 1936 in Birmingham, Alabama, Gilchrist graduated from Auburn University in 1958 with a bachelor's of science in electrical engineering. He joined the U. S. Navy, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and had a 35-year career with Gulf Power, as Fuel and Environmental Affairs Manager, before retiring in 1996.
Gilchrist was first elected to the Gulf Breeze City Council in 1982, serving as mayor pro tem for ten years, and was elected mayor in 1992.
Married to the former Suzanne Bogan, the couple had two children, M. Lane Gilchrist, Jr. and Michael E. Gilchrist. Lane was the brother of Flora-Bama owner Joe Gilchrist.
Following a long battle with leukemia, he passed away on June 12, 2009.
