Escambia County Sheriff's Deputy Jeremy Cassady is critically wounded in a shootout with Philip Monier during a home invasion. Leonard Gonzalez, Jr. is convicted of murder for the July 9, 2009 killings of Byrd and Melanie Billings.

April 2008 April 30 – The Emerald Coast Honor Flight program transports 102 World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. for a day of reflection and celebration. April 30 – Convicted drug felon Rogelio Galvan Chavez is sentenced to life in prison by Judge Casey Rodgers. April 24 – The Emerald Coast Utilities Authority votes 4-0 to initiate a voluntary curbside recycling program. April 11 – The Community Maritime Park Associates Board selects Bentina Terry to replace Hugh King. April 11 – Ground is broken on the Main Street Wastewater Treatment Plant replacement project. April 10 – Restaurateur John Ma commits suicide in a closet of his recently-opened Baba Café. April 9 – Alex King, who was convicted in 2002, along with his brother Derek, for the November 26, 2001 murder of their father, is released from prison. April 8 – Dr. Ed Meadows is selected to replace Tom Delaino as president of Pensacola Junior College. April 7 – Ryan Green is sentenced to life in prison for the 2003 murder of Pensacola Police Officer James Hallman. April 4 – Anthony Mattheiss is sentenced to 15 years in prison for the DUI-manslaughter of Charles Stanton in 2007. April 2 – U.S. presidential candidate John McCain, who underwent flight training at Pensacola NAS, speaks at a Pensacola Junior College rally. March 2008 March 28 – Erin Markes is arrested by Santa Rosa Sheriff's officials after her 4-year-old child was hospitalized for apparent neglect. March 28 – Owners of the defunct Saufley Landfill are ordered to pay $677,397 in civil penalties to the Florida DEP. March 27 – The Pensacola City Council votes unanimously to demolish the circa-1885 building at 719-721 South Palafox Street. March 26 – Jay Elementary School PTO president Jennifer Wolters is arrested for allegedly using more than $1,500 of the group's money at Bixoli casinos. March 24 – The Pensacola City Council votes 9-1 to fund the Charter Review Commission's $65,010 budget. March 17 – The Pensacola News Journal launches a new version of their pnj.com website. March 13 – Saenger Theatre renovations: crews demolish part of the building's existing south side to make way for the expansion. March 6 – Amendment 1 budget cuts: The Escambia County Commission votes to make official a hiring freeze and to notify 18 non-profits that they should not expect county funding next year. February 2008 February 25 – Phase 1 of the Pensacola Regional Airport's $100-million expansion project begins. February 23 – 15-year-old Daryl Williams is killed in a shooting incident at the Burger King on Pensacola Boulevard. Jamal Lee, 17, is later arrested and charged with murder. February 18 – Contents of the closed Seville Inn & Suites are sold at auction.
