Born | July 29, 1951 Chillicothe, Ohio |
Occupation | Escambia County Tax Collector |
Janet Holley (b. 1951) is the current Tax Collector for Escambia County. She joined the tax collector's office in 1973 and became office manager in 1991. Following the death of Matt Langley Bell III, Governor Lawton Chiles appointed Holley as the county's first female tax collector on October 21, 1998. She was elected to the position in 2000 and again (unopposed) in 2004.
In late 2008, Holley took advantage of the Florida state employee DROP program that will allow her to "retire" for one month from her recently re-elected position as of Nov 30th, 2008, then return on Jan 6th, 2009 at her full pay of 132,000 USD a year as well as an additional 80,000 USD per year in retirement benefits. This program allows an employee to draw from a pension that has already been earned, while allowing the state to keep its most experienced employee in place. Even if this program did not exist, the state would still be paying the exact same amount of monies to two people - one towards the salary of the employee, and another to an employee's retirement.
