Admin:  I run http://wikipensacola.com.  As I look at some of the stuff you are doing, it seems silly to duplicate one another's efforts.  There are a few issues I have with your site, though.  When I first visited this site you were using a restrictive license, but it appears that you have migrated to GFDL.  Is this the case for all content?  Secondly, why do you use that weird SWF Flash thing to render article titles?  Just to use that font? :-) Wikipens 22:28, 13 March 2007 (CDT)

May I ask what hosting company you are using?  Also what version of MediaWiki?  And your logo, did you design that, or pull it from somewhere? Wikipens 15:18, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

:Wasn't sure if you noticed my previous response, but I'm posting answers to these questions on your talk page. --Admin 16:01, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

I didn't even realise MediaWiki 1.9 was out.  Geez.

I am considering merging my project into yours, because as I said, it seems kind-of silly to duplicate our efforts.  Firsly, would you have any problem with me doing that?

Secondly, do you have a process for adminning other users?  Do you plan on allowing other admins? Wikipens 16:18, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

:One more thing:  Do you make backups of the database ever? Wikipens 16:54, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

::So far, I've done backups whenever I upgrade the MediaWiki software. I suppose that's something I'll need to do more frequently, though. --Admin 17:00, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

:Sorry for the endless questions, but I am curious and OCD... Did you try using the logo as the favicon?  It looks like it would make a really nice favicon, but too much detail might be lost at 16x16, j/w... Wikipens 17:10, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

:Also, you can delete the image I uploaded at :Image:Endoftheline.jpg if you like, I am not ready to move the article over, I have to figure out the differences in the google maps extensions our two sites use. Wikipens 17:20, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

Ah ha!  I didn't notice that "make a map" link.  That makes it a lot more intuitive than the GMaps extension I was using.  Mine didn't have the ability to do paths, either.  Awesome.  Wikipens 20:30, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

:Eight years later... Hey, I'm moving back to Pensacola after going to FSU then working in the Washington, D.C. area for a few years. I started poking around Pensapedia in the last few weeks and realized that it could be a lot of fun to start editing it again, so you may see a more activity than normal in the next couple of weeks at least. By the way, I noticed that there are a ton of pages that appear to have been created by spam accounts; I've been deleting the content and commenting that they are "spam pages that should be deleted". If there's a better way for me to ago about this, I'd be happy to do it.

Accidentally discovered this pedia doing Google searching, and wish I'd run across it earlier. I'm working on the Wikipedia National Register of Historic Places Project, particularly Florida, since that's where I live. Ironically, I took a trip up thru the panhandle last weekend, and spent a good part of Saturday in Pensacola and took lots of pics. Then I find that you've shot a bunch of the places on my list. My goal, btw, is to get shots of all the NRHPs in Florida. If I can figure how to transfer some of yours to Wikipedia, I'd love to, so as to get some of the stuff I missed. And maybe talk you into getting a pic or two of some of the ones I missed? Anyway, good luck with this project. You can contact me, if you'd like, at User talk:Ebyabe. :) --71.1.155.140 20:58, 28 March 2008 (CDT)

At , a bit down the page under "Pensacola Police of the Past", there are five PPD photos... the first two are c. 1890s and I have uploaded them as PD-old.  Of the latter three, the third's date is unknown;  the fourth is from 1938, and the fifth is from 1952.  The alt comments for the images state they are courtesy of the Pensacola Police Department.  Would you gander then that the PPD is copyright holder?  Do you know if they are eligible to hold copyright?  dscosson ··· talk 12:08, 25 April 2008 (CDT)

:Works of the federal are generally free to use, but the PPD wouldn't fall under that. From here:

<blockquote>

3.1.3  Does 17 USC §10560 apply to works of State and Local Governments?<br/>

No, it applies only to federal government works. State and local governments may and often do claim copyright in their publications. It is their prerogative to set policies that may allow, require, restrict or prohibit claim of copyright on some or all works produced by their government units.

:I can see the arrows, yes.  For me at least, MediaWiki is rendering what you are putting in as regular dashes.  Not a big deal, I prefer n-dashes though, lol.  I don't mind you not using them, but do you mind if I correct them?  Haha.  And I do prefer the order of "Births", "Deaths", "Events", but more for standardisation than for preference.  As long as they are all in some standard format, I don't care as much what it is. :Yeah, it's the old Blount Junior High School built in 1937 (expanded from the earlier Lockley Elementary School built in 1915). Closed around '82, it was purchased from the school district by Frank McGinley for about $5000 "as-is." McGinley was going to turn it into retirement apartments and spent about $250k removing asbestos and fixing it up, and even lived in it for a while, but ran out of money. I have obtained from the UF Libraries a total of 1,885 high-resolution aerial images dating from 1940-1965. I don't know exactly what to do with them. I don't guess I should upload them all because they're huge. Even after converting them to JPEG at 80% quality they're still 2+ MB each, which works out to 3+ GB. They're pretty awesome though. Whaddya think, just upload individual images when they're something noteworthy in the image? <span style="font-variant:small-caps; vertical-align:5%; font-family: Georgia, serif; color:#cccccc;">—&nbsp;dscosson • talk&nbsp;</span> 16:47, 5 April 2009 (CDT)

:Wow, that's fantastic! We could make room for them all, but navigation could get tricky. ::Yeah. Well I thought of doing it kind of like you did the Sanborn maps, and separating them either by year or by flight (for example, 1940 has like 9 different flights). But even then having them all on the same page would be cumbersome probably. I'll start using them here and there like I've done in Port of Pensacola. These images are really awesome and document growth like nothing else. ==Table Help?==
 +
 +
Hey there. I wanted to use something similar to a succession table on Pensacola High School to put the most recent valedictorian and then the one before him/her. I also wanted to do something similar for the salutatorian. So basically it'd be the title in the middle, i.e. Valedictorian, and then on the left it'd have 2008's valedictorian or something and then 2009's on the right, and it could be updated yearly. Then we could somehow link the title to a list of all of the past valedictorians and a list of all past salutatorians or something like that. I can go ahead and work on the list now, and feel free to make suggestions as to the format of the table. I just didn't know the easiest way to do it. Sethisodd 22:06, 27 June 2009 (CDT)
 +
:Trying to make articles for every school's valedictorian and salutatorian would be untenable, I think, especially since many of them don't return to Pensacola after college. A table listing similar to what you started (and what I've since moved to a single article here) should be sufficient, unless the individuals go on to do other things that are notable. <span style="font-family:Georgia, serif; color:#cccccc;">&mdash;&nbsp;admin&nbsp;&bull;&nbsp;talk&nbsp;</span> 16:17, 29 June 2009 (CDT)

::I think you misunderstood me. I wanted a table on the actual school's page that simply had the names of maybe the past two valedictorians, i.e. Travis Hornsby - 2008 in the left box, then PHS IB Valedictorian in the center, and then Jenny Zeng - 2009 on the right box. Then, PHS IB Valedictorian would link to the now merged page of the lists. It doesn't have to be implemented, but I thought it would be something neat to include on the school's page. Let me know what you think or if you think the idea could be improved. Sethisodd 16:24, 29 June 2009 (CDT)

Pensapedia equivalent of Wikisource
How would you feel about having a Pensapedia equivalent of Wikisource? We could use it to post the full text of Pensacola-related documents, like West Florida transfer of sovereignty document, 1821, or more recently, particularly noteworthy City ordinances/resolutions. If you hadn't noticed, I've been citing a lot of them lately, and it's impossible to directly link to them because the City keeps its digitised records in this horrible, ancient, difficult-to-navigate Fortis system which requires downloading a special plugin. What I'm suggesting is that we could create, for instance, a Source: or Document: namespace and then I could transcribe noteworthy one, like the Jim Crow ordinances, or the street name changing one from 1906, etc.

:Very strange, doesn't correspond with the geography of Pensacola as I ever knew it.  It's definitely the late 20s, early 30s judging by the cars.  The tall building labeled as American National Bank could be the back side of what I knew as the Empire Bldg. at Gov't and Palafox; but that would mean the camera is somewhere in the vicinity of Government St. between Railroad St. and Seville Square, and the big body of water at the right doesn't make sense.
 +
:The lower dark bldg. left of the bank tower would be sitting on Ferdinand Plaza; that doesn't work.
 +
:Also at the far right is an ornate, baroque church looking kind of building, which is not something I recognize.  Plus some more baroque/mediterranean looking buildings not as tall, don't recognize either.  And if you look dead center in the photograph, beyond the covered street bridge (also nothing I recognize), the tall building in the distance seems to be set at an angle - which again doesn't correspond to Pensacola geography.
 +
:Don't think the water could be the bayfront, as the Empire Bldg. isn't that close to the water.
 +
:Plus there are too many palm trees (?) at the left of the pic to correspond with that area of downtown.  I don't think its Pensacola.  Mobile, maybe?  Jacksonville?  Did the Am. Nat'l Bk. have a branch outside Pensacola?  A mystery, for sure.  Where did you find this?  Textorus 02:53, 22 September 2010 (CDT)

Was browsing the site and found something that wanted correction (a red link for which there is a page but under a slightly different name) but without a login it looks like my edits won't take. I think I might be able to make a few more contributions - I have some original photos from the NAS which would not be under anyone else's copyright that I might contribute plus some other things, however, I cannot find a registration function which branches off the login page on most wikis. Am an editor in wikipedia - not terribly prolific but my edits persist because I know what I am doing and on several wikispot wikis as well as being a long term editor on DMOZ and a publisher of many sites. Is there some way I might get a login for Pensapedia? I also don't find any easy messaging system besides talk and I don't want to leave my email/contact details in the clear. 24 March[edit]

I have responded to you on my talk page. Also, I tried to insert route number (Florida 289) into the infobox code for the 9th Avenue article, but it is not displaying, would you mind taking a look at that? I am not good with conditionals. Wikipens 12:19, 24 March 2007 (CDT)

I'm fairly certain the problem is entirely my fault. (I'm not good with conditionals either.) The Wikipedia road infobox I copied had all kinds of extra parameters for cross-country highways that I omitted, and some of the output fields were probably lost in the process. I'll look into it. --Admin 13:29, 24 March 2007 (CDT)
Cool. I was using barebones infoboxes on my project that just had params w/o conditionals. Conditionals are useful but confusing as hell. As far as the addresses thing we talked about on my talk page, that works for me. I'd just like a place to put that info, like what business used to be in a particular building, etc. and it doesn't seem fitting to put it in the article for the current occupant. I'm definitely not advocating we have articles for every podunk address in the city with content like "My uncle Jim lives here", etc. As far as the adminship, thanks a bunch. If I make any edits to articles you started, stylistic or otherwise, that you disagree with, feel free to revert me or bring it up with me on my talk page. Wikipens 14:38, 24 March 2007 (CDT)

Hey, I really like this Idea...[edit]

I found Pensapedia through a talk page on wikipedia, and I really love the idea. I got an account a few days ago, and began editing when I got the time, and I think I got a lot done, albeit haphazardly I suppose. I was just sort of operating on the principal that "whatever I'm about to do is better than no article on this particular subject" I guess. The issue of the CMPA is pretty...fuzzy. The CMPA board has only been in existence for several months, however CMPA, Inc. has been around for several years now. And of course now Quint Studer no longer has any sort of official position in the CMPA. Maybe we could clarify in the article that Community Maritime Park Associates developed the idea for the CMP, instead of simply saying "developed."

Sorry about the vague categories, again, I think I may have been getting a little carried away.

Anyway, this is a wonderful idea and I'll do what I can to help. Thanks a bunch for getting the ball rolling on something like this.

Pat O'Sullivan 01:57, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

Eight years later...
Thanks for keeping this site up!

Road infobox[edit]

Hey, I figured out why the road infobox isn't allowing the route field to be populated. It's the section {{#if:{}| colspan="2" align="center"<big>{{infobox road/{state} {type} name|num={route}}}</big>. The Wikipedia template accounts for subtemplates ("Infobox road/state"). At some point (whenever you get around to it), can you strip this section and replace it with a field which is just "Route" for the title and allows me to input route shield images as the content? dcosson ··· talk 15:31, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

Historic Pensacola[edit]

Pensacola police photos[edit]

At [2], a bit down the page under "Pensacola Police of the Past", there are five PPD photos... the first two are c.

Works of the federal are generally free to use, but the PPD wouldn't fall under that. From here:

3.1.3 Does 17 USC §10560 apply to works of State and Local Governments?
No, it applies only to federal government works. State and local governments may and often do claim copyright in their publications. It is their prerogative to set policies that may allow, require, restrict or prohibit claim of copyright on some or all works produced by their government units.

So I think we should probably get permission. --Admin 12:20, 25 April 2008 (CDT)
...That being said, obviously I've taken a pretty liberal interpretation of fair use in the images I've uploaded, so what do I know? We can always remove them if someone complains. --Admin 15:07, 25 April 2008 (CDT)

The Events before Births thing wasn't intentional... just couldn't remember which we've been putting first, or if we had a rule about that. You prefer Births first? As for the dashes, I usually don't bother with the &ndash; code. I just type in the character like I would in a word processor (option-hyphen on my Mac)... is MediaWiki not translating it the right way?

On a related note, you can see the new right and left arrows in the date template, right? (Just January so far.) --Admin 12:52, 5 June 2008 (CDT)

I can see the arrows, yes. As long as they are all in some standard format, I don't care as much what it is. dscosson ··· talk 15:20, 5 June 2008 (CDT)
Nah, I don't mind if you change them. That's weird that they're not rendering as proper n-dashes. I'll start doing the coded forms, I guess. Births -> Deaths -> Events is also fine with me, and I'll try to remember that when I get some time to do the other 11 months. --Admin 15:41, 5 June 2008 (CDT)

Not sure if you still even check this page, but if you ever see it, I have another signature that could use transparefying. I need to learn how to do this (well).

See this[edit]

Whenever I want to draw your attention somewhere, I am just going to add it under this header instead of making a new header each time. If that's okay.

Anyway, I don't know how you are with Spanish, but take a look at Talk:Pintado plan if you get a minute. dscossontalk 22:54, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

I keep pretty well abreast of the changes made via the RSS feed, so you probably don't need to put notice here unless I haven't responded in a day or so; the talk page for the article(s) in question should be fine. — admin • talk  14:22, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Google Maps Street View[edit]

ZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMG Google Maps has gone live with Street View in Pensacola finallllllllllllly! Look! my house! There has got to be a way to embed this! — dscossontalk  16:56, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't think the <googlemaps> extension we have now supports it, but it looks like there's another extension I can install to use this "widget" for Street View integration. — admin • talk  19:16, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Well... don't trouble yourself... but it would be reallllllllly cool to be able to do something like that... very illustrative! Haha, I have spent the last two or three hours perusing Pensacola on it! It's so convenient! — dscossontalk  19:26, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Testing... This bookmarklet widget should help with getting map data. You can drag into your broswer's links/bookmarks bar. Google Maps Widget — admin • talk  17:26, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, I'm not sure how the bookmarklet works... could be an Internet Explorer thing. But the widget itself seems to be working. — admin • talk  17:47, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh, that is cool. Bookmarklets don't work in MSIE. — dscossontalk  20:13, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
I guess there is no way to remove the zoom controls? Oh well. Also -- this would be cool to put into the image field on infoboxes, but it's not really feasible because the template has the image code precoded into it, so it leaves code on the finished template. We'll figure something out. — dscossontalk  20:22, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

113 North C Street[edit]

Do you know what this large abandoned building is at 113 North C Street? My guess is a school but I don't know. — dscossontalk  16:52, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it's the old Blount Junior High School built in 1937 (expanded from the earlier Lockley Elementary School built in 1915). Closed around '82, it was purchased from the school district by Frank McGinley for about $5000 "as-is." McGinley was going to turn it into retirement apartments and spent about $250k removing asbestos and fixing it up, and even lived in it for a while, but ran out of money. After Hurricane Ivan some investors bought the property for $400k. Source: "'Dinosaur' of an old school becomes home to ex-student." It's really beautiful. I discovered it haphazardly while canvassing during the election but didn't have time to linger. I went back by yesterday. I really, really hope someone manages to salvage it, but it looks like it's in pretty bad shape. I'm going to work up an article, do you have a way to forward me that PNJ article? Also, it's named after A.C., not W.A. Blount, right? — dscossontalk  17:43, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
Nevermind on the name, it's W. A. after all. — dscossontalk  18:05, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. If it's not too much trouble, could you also get me the article “Blount a prestigious name from city’s past,” by Mary Dawkins, in the August 21, 1999 PNJ? — dscossontalk  18:12, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm not finding any article with that name, or anything similar on that date. Where did you find the citation? — admin • talk  18:17, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
This link, footnote #13. — dscossontalk  18:35, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
That's weird. There are a lot of great articles by that author as part of the "Millennium March" series, but I'm not finding one for Blount. Maybe it wasn't digitally archived? Microfilm should have it. — admin • talk  18:46, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
No biggie. Surprised that there is so little online information about it though. — dscossontalk  18:52, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Oh mah god[edit]

So, I'm going through Bliss magazines, right, and I stumble across the most racist thing ever. It's a picture of a black man, eating oysters, with the caption, "If you want to see a happy darky just watch one eat oysters on the seashore."

Oh mah god! — dscossontalk  23:32, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Yikes... Unfortunately that's not nearly the 'most racist thing even' to happen in Pensacola. Hell, Bliss was probably pretty progressive for his time. — admin • talk  23:35, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I know, but ugh! I'm going to delete the image, it's so weird. — dscossontalk  23:41, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Category question[edit]

Category:Druggists or Category:Pharmacists? — dscossontalk  21:46, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Papa Wikipedia uses "Category:Pharmacists." That's what I'd go with. — admin • talk  22:43, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
Boooooooooring. — dscossontalk  23:23, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Sortable tables[edit]

Hey, if you get bored sometime, do you think you could try to implement Wikipedia's sortable tables? — dscossontalk  17:45, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Ooh, neat! Yeah, I'll take a look. — admin • talk  17:47, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Aerial images[edit]

I have obtained from the UF Libraries a total of 1,885 high-resolution aerial images dating from 1940-1965. I don't know exactly what to do with them. I don't guess I should upload them all because they're huge. Even after converting them to JPEG at 80% quality they're still 2+ MB each, which works out to 3+ GB. They're pretty awesome though. Whaddya think, just upload individual images when they're something noteworthy in the image? — dscossontalk  16:47, 5 April 2009 (CDT)

Wow, that's fantastic! We could make room for them all, but navigation could get tricky. I'd say start with the ones that go with articles or that have clearly identifiable features in them. — admin • talk  17:07, 5 April 2009 (CDT)
Yeah. If you'd like to go through them, 'll burn you a DVD sometime. — dscossontalk  17:17, 5 April 2009 (CDT)

"Confederate"[edit]

Mon ami, tied for second at Special:WantedPages is Confederate. What do you think we should do with that? Redirect it to some sort of article specifically about the Confederacy in Pensacola? Replace said links with interwiki links to Wikipedia's Confederacy article? Redirect to Civil War? Any thoughts? — dscossontalk  13:35, 11 May 2009 (CDT)

I was thinking that it would eventually have its own article about the Confederate presence in Pensacola, maybe a list of officers, etc. But I'd be fine if it redirects to Civil War till we get around to it. — admin • talk  14:02, 11 May 2009 (CDT)

Table Help?[edit]

Trying to make articles for every school's valedictorian and salutatorian would be untenable, I think, especially since many of them don't return to Pensacola after college. A table listing similar to what you started (and what I've since moved to a single article here) should be sufficient, unless the individuals go on to do other things that are notable. — admin • talk  16:17, 29 June 2009 (CDT)
I think you misunderstood me.
Oh, I see now. Hmm... how about just a link to the "graduating classes" article? Maybe under a "See also" header? — admin • talk  16:46, 29 June 2009 (CDT)
Sounds good. I'll take care of it. Sethisodd 17:19, 29 June 2009 (CDT)

Article headers[edit]

Hey -- did you change how the article headers display? They are just showing up as inline text for me, whereas before they were flash objects with your fancy Pensapedia font. — dscossontalk  12:18, 2 August 2009 (CDT)

Yeah, that happened at my work computer after some software update or another. My home computer still shows the Flash font replacement correctly. I expect the technique I'm using is falling out of compliance as browsers are updated. I think the script has since been updated, but I'll probably switch over to CSS3 @font-face embedding. — admin • talk  19:10, 2 August 2009 (CDT)

F. D. Sanders[edit]

The City is looking for a photo of Frank Dent Sanders for a plaque at the new Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Community Center. You can't, by chance, think of anywhere where you have seen a better image than our crummy newsprint photo, can you? — dscossontalk  11:42, 6 September 2009 (CDT)

Nope, sorry; what's here is the best I've seen. I'd guess the Historical Society/WFHPI probably has an original somewhere, if anyone does. — admin • talk  12:20, 6 September 2009 (CDT)

Pensapedia equivalent of Wikisource[edit]

Just an idea... if it doesn't sound like a good one, no biggie. — dscossontalk  18:41, 11 September 2009 (CDT)

Yeah, I had considered something like a "Source:" namespace in the past, to archive primary sources in digital format, but never actually got around to it. Not hard to set it up though. You prefer "Source" or "Document"? — admin • talk  00:18, 12 September 2009 (CDT)
Source: is good with me, but I don't have a preference, really. — dscossontalk  07:29, 13 September 2009 (CDT)
Okay, "Source" and "Source talk" are namespaces now, as visible in the Search function. — admin • talk  18:28, 14 September 2009 (CDT)

Help me identify this photo[edit]

3A 003A.jpg

From where was this photo taken? I can't figure it out. — dscossontalk  07:26, 11 July 2010 (CDT)

Very strange, doesn't correspond with the geography of Pensacola as I ever knew it.
The lower dark bldg. left of the bank tower would be sitting on Ferdinand Plaza; that doesn't work.
Also at the far right is an ornate, baroque church looking kind of building, which is not something I recognize.
Don't think the water could be the bayfront, as the Empire Bldg. isn't that close to the water.
Plus there are too many palm trees (?) at the left of the pic to correspond with that area of downtown. I don't think its Pensacola. Mobile, maybe? Jacksonville? Did the Am. Nat'l Bk. have a branch outside Pensacola? A mystery, for sure. Where did you find this? Textorus 02:53, 22 September 2010 (CDT)
It was listed on eBay and advertised as Pensacola. I think you're right though, despite the American National Bank signage, this has to be somewhere else. — dscossontalk  10:45, 22 September 2010 (CDT)

Registration[edit]
