After graduating from Tate High School, Thomas served in the U.S. Army, with the 101st Airborne Division. Thomas later worked briefly as a homebuilder before becoming a teacher. He taught special education at Tate High School for eight years, during which time he was Escambia Teacher of the Year and a finalist for Florida Teacher of the Year.
