- 1861 – Civil War: Federal troops receive orders to abandon the mainland's Fort Barrancas and refortify on Santa Rosa Island's Fort Pickens. The communication is not intercepted by Confederate troops because it was "in a pink, scented envelope addressed by a female hand."[1]
