A Battle of Pensacola, considered part of the First Seminole War, took place in May 1818 when American forces led by Andrew Jackson captured Pensacola, then the capital of Spanish West Florida, which Jackson felt was being used by the Seminole for strikes against America. After the surrender by Spanish Governor Jose Masot, Jackson established a temporary American provisional government in the city.
