My name is Leonard Patrick Gonzalez, Jr., and I am a direct descendant of Don Manuel Gonzalez. I've often wondered why there is such little recognition given to such an important member of Pensacola's history. My Great Great Great Grandfather gave so much to this city (and state), and I find it reprehensible that he has been all but forgotten by the citizenry and and civic leaders of Escambia County. Furthermore, I find it VERY interesting that he "donated" Plaza Ferdinand to the city...during it's occupation, while at the same time operating a thriving business there. It is interesting that when all of the "donated" land grants were returned to the citizens of Escambia County by the United States government, Plaza Ferdinand was never "donated" back. Perhaps it is time for someone to investigate this matter a little further.
